Breast Plates
2005, 3D form, 400 mm x 450 mm, shaped dacron, aluminium mesh, cement. Antique willow-pattern china, silver spoons, embroidered linen and lace. The piece represents the cementing together of time-honoured traditions and skills with that of the integrity of domestic art forms.
Double T-Cup
Domestic Goddess
2016, 800 x 400 mm, shaped dacron, aluminium mesh, cement china plates, wooden spoon, printed tea towel. A celebration of creativity in the kitchen
Toby' Fountain
2015, 2200 mm x 1200 mm, reinforcing rod, mesh, windbreak cloth, concrete and Toby Stafford pottery. This is a memorial to my friend and talented potter. After his death I wanted to make something in honour of his life and artistry. It took me 4 years to complete, as I only worked on it during the summer holidays. Over about 20 years we helped him with numerous wood firings, and collected broken and damaged, yet still so beautiful pieces, from the numerous kiln firings. So this fountain is a collection of his pottery styles over his lifetime. It is located inland from Doubtless Bay Northland.
Bird Bath
2014, 1000 mm x 400 mm, concrete drain pipe, and for the vessel, shaped dacron, aluminium mesh, cement. I always seem to have a project on the “go” that uses random off-cuts of tile and china from other more disciplined projects. This creates a favourite place to visit for the local birds.
Susanne Williamson
I have been involved with making mosaics since 2003. In my work as a fabric artist, the medium of appliqué is one of my favourite styles. Creating a cohesive form from seemingly random bits is a creative joy. So when I returned from my first inspirational visit to Barcelona, mosaic seemed like a perfect fit for me.
My first serious piece was “Breast Plates”, which was a finalist in the 2005 WOW (World of Wearable Art) show.
I love the challenge of using old china, and building armatures. And I am always trying to push the boundaries of the ways I can use this medium for my art works.
