New Zealand Mosaic Art

Rowena Rooney

Ni sa bula vinaka my name is Rowena Rooney and I have been mosaicing now for over 20 years. I’m a bit of an art vacuum, always looking for new things to try and when I saw mosaics I knew straight away this was going to be my passion!

My artwork is largely inspired by my Fijian / Kiwi heritage which is a very passionate, strong part of my life journey.

I am a trained primary school teacher and have also been a Visual Art lecturer at the University of Auckland Faculty of Education. I taught at Te Atatu Intermediate School as their Visual Art Specialist for ten years and am now there part time, as well as the Visual Art Specialist at our local Matipo Primary School.

Last year I exhibited as a Fijian artist at the Auckland Museum celebrating the artifacts of Fiji and I have art works in galleries around NZ.  I love working with anything that provides the right colour and texture for my artwork from plastic bottle tops to ceramic tiles to glass and  create Mosaic surfboards, birdbaths, mirrors and mandala with a Pacific flavour. as well as made-to-order requests that clients may have.

I think the biggest most challenging project I have ever worked on was a tribute on my grandmother’s grave in Nukubalavu Village, Savusavu, Fiji Islands.

It took me over a year to mosaic my design on to mosaic mesh and have it shipped over to its destination where I gathered family together to glue and grout it into place.  This project was a real labour of love and it still looks as good as it was when first put down 17 years ago!

My artwork represents my respect for nature, keeping things natural and sharing my energy with others to help beautify our surrounding environment.

I have worked on a variety of large commissions for different purposes both locally and overseas and welcome such requests.

Location:  Te Atatu Peninsula, Auckland
