New Zealand Mosaic Art

Pat George

I am a self-taught artist, with over 20 years experience as a Ceramic Artist.  I began in England, working with Harry Frazer a well-known English potter and his company Potclays in Stoke on Trent and their Lambourne Studio in Berkshire.

Later I became hooked on mosaics when I first came across the art form in the early 80’s on Waiheke Island, when I helped Verliska Campaign to mosaic the local Kindergarten Garden entrance.

Mosaic art has always challenged and inspired me to develop the art form in exciting new ways. I am always looking for different materials to incorporate into my pieces to create texture, color and reflection of light, characteristically creating three dimensional complex designs. My mosaic panels feature many different elements such as fine bone china, stained glass, vitreous glass tiles, tempered glass, mirror tiles, ceramic tiles, glass nuggets, stone pebbles, millefiori, flax, päua, shells, driftwood, bull kelp – our beaches are a treasure trove. I also incorporate my own sculpted clay designs which are raku or hand painted, glazed and fired to give my panels their unique appeal.

I love how works can subtly change throughout the day when the sunlight moves across them.

Pat has shared her knowledge of mosaic techniques through teaching for many years, and now teaches classes from her home studio “Foxhanger Studio”.

Pat George original pieces are for sale at The Helena Bay Gallery, Helena Bay Northland and Foxhanger Studio, 45Barlow Lane, Matakohe Northland.
