New Zealand Mosaic Art

Marja Kooreman/Sitara Morgenster

I made my first mosaic by following step-by-step instructions from a book, in 2002. I tend to work straight onto my ‘canvas’ in the tradition of the late Ilana Shafir’s ‘impromptu’ approach to mosaic making, reflecting moods, and inspired by nature. My mosaic studio is located off-grid in native bush near the Far North’s Mount Maungataniwha. I cut all materials by hand – no power tools. Over the years, I’ve had the fortune to see and absorb ancient mosaics up-close and personal in exotic locations as far away as Italy, Spain, Iran, Jordan, Syria and France. My work is exhibited and collected throughout New Zealand, as well as sold overseas.

I make mosaics under my pseudonym and pen name of Sitara Morgenster.

Location: Far North / Northland
