I have always collected china shards, from a very young age. I grew up in the UK and lived near an old Victorian rubbish dump. Old china shards, beads, buttons, have always been treasure to me, and I’ve always re-made things. I now mosaic my eclectic collection of junk and find it very therapeutic way to re-charge and escape from reality! I have become quite an expert on recognising china patterns and even though I have moved to New Zealand – old Victorian china shards still manage to find me. I am continuously searching….
I seem to have produced many mosaic ‘maps’ over the year and I am inspired by social history – each little china shard tells me a story and decides what it is eventually going to be. I achieved 3rd placing in the National Mosaic Exhibition 2016 First Time Entrant category, with a mosaic map of New Zealand, made from re-cycling ‘found’ china shards. I have also been a Merit Winner at the Members Art Awards Exhibition 2017 at the Estuary Arts Centre in Orewa.
I exhibit my work in Greater Auckland art galleries and I also tutor mosaic classes and workshops with an emphasis on re-cycling old, (only broken) china and making mosaic art unique and ‘meaningful’ to participants.
