Koru
(2006) 1000mm across Glass on marine ply (Indirect method) The koru is the fern frond unfurling to become a fern leaf, representing new life and beginnings. It seemed a fitting theme when I created this as a feature piece when we first built our studio gallery. Finished with a woven border of glass which compliments the natural green and brown tones, it is a favourite of mine. Sold by Mosaic Gallery, Whitianga.
Lotus Flower
(2020) 370mm across x 130mm deep Glass and mirror on curved Aquamox board. This peaceful centrepiece is pretty in pink and white glass with white irodised glass edging and mirror which glitters when a candle is added to the centre. Designed to create a tranquil atmosphere in any room, inside or out.
Just Enough Essential Parts (Jeep)
(2021) 450mm across Glass on Aquamox board (Indirect method) This piece was a commission for a birthday present. I worked with the client to recreate her husband's beloved jeep in glass. Using four different textures of black glass I was able to imitate the surfaces on the vehicle. Grey irodised glass for the windows and border worked as a natural reflection for the sky. The client was thrilled with the result.
Life Strands
(2020) 400mm x 400mm Glass and mirror on curved and woven Aquamox board. This was my entry in the 3D catagory of the 2020 Taranaki National Art Awards. This woven flax represents my DNA. The strands of life running through us all. Adopted and recently discovering my whakapapa this knowledge is a taonga I cherish. Of Maori, Scottish, English, Bohemian, and Irish decent this piece incorporates the strands of my DNA to create a weaving of glass. This piece challenged me to build the substrate which would allow me to achieve the weaving as imagined. A very satisfying work.
Red Koru Urn
(2006) 750mm Red glass vase and mirror on Aquamox board. I curved the top lip of the urn forward to make it appear three dimensional. When mum accidentally broke her stunning red glass vase I couldn't bare to throw it out so put it away for a project. The glass was very thick in places and took tile nibblers to cut it. A rewarding project. I've made a couple of these urns and they make a great feature in the garden hanging flat against a fence.
Butterfly in Blue
(2020) 380mm Glass, china and glass nuggets on curved Aquamox board. For nearly 30 years I have been known as 'The Butterfly Lady' selling my fridge art butterflies first in Australia and then NZ wide through shops and galleries. A natural progression to create them in a different form, I was inspired by the beautiful blue glass and china. Representative of freedom and transformation, butterflies have been a strong theme in my work. I am passionate about butterflies and the joy they bring to our world.
Janine Tate
I have always been an artist in one way or another.
Starting work in the art department at the Waikato Times in the eighties, I later moved to Graffix commercial art studio learning many new skills I still use today.
My mum was a Hamilton florist and I worked at Alison’s flower shoppe for her for a while before starting my little art business at home.
A move to Western Australia gave me opportunities doing markets for several years where I became known as The butterfly lady. I also had a butterfly shop for a while in Albany, Western Australia.
On returning to NZ I made butterflies, did my art and took a stained glass class at Leadlight products. I was hooked! Many classes later I ended up working for them teaching leadlighting, copper foiling and mosaic around 2007.
These days I work from our home in my studio gallery where I am blessed to work in many mediums.
I especially love design and creating mosaics using glass and upcycling china.
I am happy for you to visit my studio gallery in Hamilton by appointment.
