Little Red Fantail
2015, size: 840 mm diameter, medium: glass tiles, stained glass, glass beads, millefiori, mirror, ball chain, substrate: wood. This is a cutie fantail with a dappled shaded background. This was a combination of learned skills and building on smaller fantail designs developed in the past. The delicious red stained glass is blast of colour in contrast to the dappled green and gold background shades. This was entered into the National Mosaic Art Exhibition 2016 at the Estuary Arts Centre and then this little darling fantail flew away to a new home when the exhibition finished.
And a Lotus Flower
2016, size: 840 mm diameter, medium: glass tiles, stained glass, glitter glass tiles, glass beads, millefiori, ball chain, wood substrate. A meaningful and serene symbol that should sit high up creating a focus for contemplation. ॐ is the symbol for the sound Om, and the lotus is a symbol of beauty, prosperity and fertility. Not only is this meaningful but is beautiful because the glass catches the light differently at every angle. This is a design that I have repeated many times for clients, friends and family but I did manage to keep this particular item for myself.
Hippie Combi Van
2017, dimensions: 290 mm x 385 mm, medium: glass tiles, stained glass, glitter tiles, glass buttons, millefiori, metal charms, substrate: wooden tray with beanbag base. A fun depiction of a hippie van that has been painted all over and with a surf board lobbed on top, all ready for a weekend at the beach. This art work is on a handy tray which is functional and fun. It was made as a gift for a special person and tries to capture her spirit as a free soul. She loves it and said it is used every day as a lap top support.
Blue Mandala मण्डल
2018, size: 950 mm diameter, medium: glitter glass, stained glass, mosaic glass, mirror, millefiori, glass beads and ball chain in shades of pink and blue, wood substrate. The mandala is a geometric pattern which has been utilized as a spiritual and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing the universe. In this art work there are 9 points each representing the 9 planets, not commonly found in art work so is something special that creates a stunning subject to allow one to be open to spiritual thought. This was made to order for a special client and the rich crisp blue stained glass is the champion here as the focus, drawing attention to the points whereas the balance provides a setting for the planets but tries not to compete.
Whale Spouting Water
2016, dimensions: 290 mm x 385mm, medium: Glass tiles, glitter tiles, glass crystal tiles, millefiori, metal charms, substrate: wooden tray with beanbag base. A strong shape with crazy pattern creating a fun, interesting and comical whale on a functional tray used for tv dinner, craft base, and as a support for laptop.
Janet Sanders
I am a hobby mosaic artist and I enjoy creating glittering and shining pictures from glass and ceramic tiles. I love the play of light on the glass; it literally glitters in the sun, so gorgeous.
It is a relatively new interest for me and one that is very absorbing and captivating. This type of art work is interesting because not every piece is perfect and as a consequence no two art pieces are created the same.
My designs tend to be quirky and simplistic with inspiration coming from the traditional subjects from nature such as flowers, birds, etc.
I like boarders utilising ball chain and glass seed beads and I like to incorporate a central detail such as a heart or flower etc. to create a focal point of interest or a pop of contrasting colour. I most love symmetry of design.
But the most rewarding thing is when someone else enjoys the art work.
